Desert Flower “Female Genitalia Mutilation”

Waris Dirie

Late night television found me watching the movie Desert Flower the life story of Waris Dirie’s, who was mutilated between the ages of three - five, married at 13, her escape, rise as a super model and her coming out story of genital mutilation. The most compelling and heart wrenching part for me was her telling the story of her mutilation at three years old. It was an amazing scene of desert rock, an old blade that was unfold from and old piece of cloth, the pulling apart of her legs, the crying of a child, bloody hands of the woman who did the procedure and final the thorns she pulled off the branch to close up the vagina once she removed the labia’s.

The crying is what got to me of a child full of fright, pain and not understanding what was being done. As a mother and a woman I just do not understand the practice. To me it seems a crazy idea of keeping women not only virgins, pure but controlling there sexuality. I just do not understand why sexuality is such a huge part of society that always shines a light on women in a negative way.

Desert Flower is a beautiful movie that tells an excellent story of a woman who blossomed beautiful under hard circumstances. Llya Kebede brings the portrayal of Waris Dirie’s to life along with the supporting cast. This movie shines a light on a topic that is spoken on very little. If you ever get a chance to watch this movie please do! To learn more about the subject review Waris Dirie’s website:http://www.desertflowerfoundation.org/en/
