Learning to Love Yourself

I watched the Special that Oprah had for Whitney Houston which was an interview about two years ago. I was amazed by her beauty, honest and what seemed like her clarity on life and expectance of her imperfections.  What hit home for me was Oprah’s last statement at the end of the special…that Whitney Houston never learn to love herself.  In truth it has taken me a long time to fully learn to love myself , make peace with my mistakes, enjoy my own company,  and just become at peace with who I am flaws and all the world be damn.  It just takes to much energy to attempt to me something other then your true self. Energy better spend on enjoying life  and loving yourself. Trust I cried while watching that special but I internalized Oprah’s last statement we have to just love ourselves first before anyone else.

Fat Tuesday Reflection

Enjoy Fat Tuesday which is the day to enjoy the best of life before entering into Lent. Begin on Ash Wednesday the beginning of fasting, prayers, penance and reflection in the preparation of the resurrection on Easter Sunday. Reflecting on life due to the fact that death and people falling sick in the past few months. That life comes with responsibilities to yourself to live it to the best of your potential. Realization that you want to actually take a chance on yourself the talent that was give to you by the creator. Life is extremely short we all have something that we are good at and should never let it go to waste. Life should be live to the fullest, the best of you and perhaps leave this world it a bit better then when you arrived in into it. During this season of reflection remove fear from your life and just live and learn to love because in the end we all will die. I do not wish to have what ifs in the after life.

Do The Unexpected This "Valentine's Day"!

Let’s give the cliché a break! What do I mean by this? Leave the balloons, cheesy Hallmark cards, teddy bears, red roses, bottle of champagne, chocolate heart boxes, chocolate covered strawberries, as well as dinner & a movie for the amateurs! Keep in mind Valentine’s Day isn’t a federal/state holiday, meaning you still have to do your 9 to 5 so it's understandable that things are going to be "short & sweet". Furthermore, we're on a brink of a depression so, let’s save the dinner at Ruth Chris, Flemings Steak House, and any other 5 star dinning for another occasion. A nice back/foot rub would be appreciated just as much as eating out. With that said here are some simple, yet etiquette suggestions.

Morning Suggestions | Day off

Ditch the bubble bath > Morning shower for 2, please!

Forget the heart shape pancakes > Cup of Joe & donut(s) Or Biscuits & Tea will do!

Lunch/Dinner | Snacks

Champagne/Moscato > Neige – Laface Cachee or Bordeaux Superior - Jean Faux

Steak & Potatoes > Buttered Lobster, and a baked potato [What could be better than feeding your lover and some butter drips? Seize the KISS, damn it!!]

Chocolate Covered Strawberries > Fruit Platter (grapes, Cherries, Pineapple, Kiwi)  Strawberries/Peaches and Whip Cream/Cool Whip

There is no right or wrong way to celebrate Valentine’s Day! The most important thing is to remember to have fun, and do the unexpected. End the night with reading a passage from a book/poem, or playing a board/card game in a candle lite room. Put on some smooth light music, dim the lights, and take the time to slow dance. Hey, even four-play is game to end a great occasion.

Melancholy "Dedicated to Love"

Today is Valentines Day and I have completed my challenge that I made for myself. So much has happen since I started this Valentines challenge so much has happen life is so unexpected and death seems to creep up unexpectedly. I am going to quote my beautiful sisters post on face book "Today is uncertain, and tomorrow is not promised or guaranteed. I vow to live my days as there are no nights, and cherish each breath as if it was my last. Let your family, friends, and loved ones know you care constantly!" No longer should we live in what ifs lets just live and share love. My last piece inspired out of the death of Whitney Houston her bond with her daughter and family. Valentine's Day Strikes Again

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow February 14, 2012 and the pressure most likely has been on all month for Love Declarations. Ooh so sweet but should love not be shown all year long to those we proclaim to love children, family, friends and lovers the same. The pressure is more for lovers whose relationships that are stormy. For your sake I hope that you can pull out a beautiful romantic gesture! Good Luck

 It seems that February has always celebrated romance and love that contains Roman and Christian traditions. The Roman’s celebrated Lupercalia a festival that celebrated fertility and dedicated to Faunus the Roman god of agriculture. Catholics attempt to Christianize the pagan celebration by celebrating Valentines Day in February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentines death.

Part of the origins of this day lay at the feet of the Catholic Patron Saints Valentine. My favorite is the one in regards to Valentine who was killed due to his attempt to help Christians escape the harsh Roman prisons. His imprisonment led to him being beaten and tortured but also led to him falling in love with a young girl who visited him. He sent her a letter that he signed “From your Valentine” before his death.

Share a little love on Valentines Day to those who lay claims to your heart. My heart belongs to the two very important people in my life before all my girls. I will always love my family, friends and lover’s who have loved me and helped to mold me.

Icon Whitney Houston Dies at 48

Aug 9th 1963 - Feb 11th 2012

I am beyond devastated that Whitney Houston has passed. It boggled my mind when I heard it this evening from several sources that she had pasted. In Middle School Whitney Houston was introduce to us with her song “Greatest Love of All” I think ever young person wanted to find that strength within us to leave the hood behind. When I think of Whitney I think of the Bodyguard the movie the music the beauty that she was in that movie. Just an amazing Diva with pipes unlike any other, charisma, and style! I am very saddened by her sudden death and as I watch her video for “I Will Always Love You” it brought tears to my eyes. I feel for her family, friends and love ones at a death that seem to come out of no where. Whitney battled some demons in the true Musical sense of old Blues, R&B and Rock & Roll style. Leaving an amazing body of work and millions of fans like me a bit devastated by her early death.

National Black AIDS/HIV Day

It saddens me that the rate of new case continues to grow in the Black community. The statistics from the 2009 research by the CDC, African Americans make up 14% of the population in the United States and make up 44% of new cases of AIDS in 2009 the highest population of new cases along with deaths from the disease. To me it is just crazy either as African Americans we think we are invincible or just do not care to protect against the disease. It should be thought of this way when you sleep with your partner you are also sleeping with them, previous partners and their previous partners and so on.

Know your status, learn more about the disease, and protect yourself and your partner!

Some quick facts from CDC study in 2009:

Black men accounted for 70% of the estimated new cases of HIV

Black men having sex with men accounted for 37% of new cases of HIV

The highest number amongst men having sex with men in the age range of 13-29

Black women accounted for 30% and 85% of these cases 85% acquired through heterosexual sex

CDC providing community help through such organizations as WILLOW, Sister to Sister, SIHLE, NIA, d-up:Defend Yourself and Many Men, Many Voices

Don Cornelius Dead at 75

Soul Train to me growing up is what 106 & Park is to my daughter. My way of getting music, spot my favorite artist and attempt to learn new dance steps. As I attempted to runway walk in my mother’s living room Saturday mornings. It said to me to think that Don Cornelius at the age of 78 may have taken his own life. He brought a lot of music in to many households for 35 years…Rest In Peace to the man that help me find Soul!
