As a parent I think the hardest thing for us to come to grips with is that are children our independent beings. Yes they are combination of both parents but they are individuals outside of their extensions of us. I think the most profound thing that I have read in regards to parenting was from Cyndi Lauper Ms Girls Just Want to have fun. When it comes to raising children “Do not let fear and long-held beliefs interfere with the most important relationship you will have in your life. Lead with your heart and with the love that you have for your child. Just a little bit of acceptance can make a huge difference, and that little bit will grow over time.1”
I know at times I get so wrapped up in trying to give my children the best. That at times I forget the most important thing that children need is love, acceptance, and an open line of communication with parents. I have to stop my self at times because they are living there lives and are not here to full fill so lost glory that I did not accomplish in life. What I do give daily regardless of how good or bad the day has been is lots of kisses, hugs and I never forget to tell them that I love them. I hope that it helps during the day to know that Mommy loves them regardless of how bad the day may go.
It is hard to believe that there are quite a few young people who do not receive this unconditional love do to something like sexuality or sexual preference. Cyndi Lauper’s article “Give a Damn” was a bit eye opening on the runway status of young people who identify with the LGBT community. The fact that lack of acceptance, love and fear cause quite a few children to run and end up living on the streets. A sad fact that it is time we as a community we start to do better by young people love is one of the easiest and cheapest gift that we can share with each other. Check out the website http://www.wegiveadamn.org and lets attempt to better education ourselves and children on accepting others differences.
